Blogging For Business
Are you one of millions of people and businesses around the world sharing their thoughts, opinions and experiences through online diaries, or blogs? The modern blog, which is short for "weblog", evolved from online diaries where people kept a running account of their lives.
Nowadays, there are countless ways that you can quickly and easily get online with your own blog and not spend a single penny. Blogger and Wordpress are just a couple of the most popular sites you can use to get started. "I'm in business, though. What are the benefits of having a company blog?" you ask. Business blogs give you the opportunity to pass on your expertise and knowledge to a wide audience. You know a lot about your own particular business, so share this with others. Over time you start to build up a reputation as being an expert in your own field, which in turns draws more people and business to you. Building your PR like this, you can find the media come to you for comments on your industry rather than your competition.
A few months ago we talked about brand building, and a blog is a great way to help build your business's brand. Be sure that the style of writing you use reflects the way you want your business to be perceived, but don't agonise over every word. Just try to get into a consistent style, then you only need to vet your posts for errors and readability. This will keep the length of time it takes to add entries to a minimum, which in turn means that you can add new entries more often. Blogs that are frequently updated get more visitors and subscribers than those that lie dormant for weeks on end, so it pays to keep posting once you've started.
Take a look around at other businesses who are blogging already to learn from. There are some great business bloggers out there – take a look at their content, their discussions off their blog, their passion and their wit. While looking around at other quality blogs you can add your own comments and link back to your own.
You may also ask what is the point of creating all this content if it's just going to get pushed down the list of diary entries and will eventually be archived? Well, the search engines will not forget them, so make sure that your entries represent your business well and are on topics that people will search for now and in the future.
Don't be afraid to be controversial from time to time, but make sure you are never rude. Creating some debate can increase your traffic as word spreads about your views and more people want to join in.
Finally, some other top tips to help you get started in the big world of blogging.
- Use well named categories and make posts easy to find
- Provide quality links to other sites that your readers will enjoy and find informative
- Concentrate on writing shorter more frequent entries – sometimes even a couple of sentences linking to a relevant article will suffice, so long as it's pertinent and informative
- Include your key contact information on your blog.
